Guide to creating great UGC content
Tips on image, audio, lighting and editing for creating great UGC videos.
Good UGC feels homemade, spontaneous and real: real people using real products, honestly and naturally. It shouldn't look like an agency-made ad.
That doesn't mean sloppy, though. You're representing a brand, so authenticity needs to go hand in hand with quality: good lighting, clear audio and clean framing.
🛠️ Getting set up
- Use what you have, and use it well. You don't need a professional camera. A good phone and a simple tripod make a big difference, because stable, clean framing adds a lot.
- Tidy your space. Film somewhere organised and well lit, with a neutral or simple background. Keep the focus on the product and avoid clutter.
- Get the light right. Natural light (like a window) works great, or a ring light if you have one. Do a few test shots and adjust until the product is clearly visible, without harsh shadows or overexposure.
🎙️ While you're filming
- Look after your sound. Keep the phone's microphone close to your mouth or record somewhere quiet. Avoid background noise like fans or traffic. Rooms with rugs and curtains sound better.
- Speak clearly. Talk slowly and confidently, with good diction. A quick rehearsal helps. When you can, add captions — they help people follow along and make your video more accessible.
- Show the product in use. Don't just talk about it: apply it, wear it, try it out — whatever makes sense for the product. It brings viewers closer to the real experience.
✂️ Editing
- Go easy on transitions. Simple cuts or effects can make the video more dynamic, especially for repetitive steps. Just don't overdo it — the product should stay the star.
Skip background music
For copyright and commercial-use reasons, don't add music unless the project says you can.
